Bible Study Blog-Mark Your Key Words

Bible Study Blog-Mark Your Key Words

A key word is a word that is essential to the text.  It could be a descriptive word, a noun or an action that plays a part in the understanding of the author's message.  A key word or phrase when removed, leaves the message without meaning. These key words or phrases are often repeated throughout a chapter of the book in a segment or the book as a whole.  In 1 Peter 5 notice that the word suffering is used three times.

When you study, mark these key words and phrases and ask the questions who, what, where, when and why. An example would be, who suffers?, what causes the suffering?, how did this suffering come about?, and where did it take place?

Mark your keywords with either symbols, (these will be of your own making so that you can recognize them easily) colors, or through the use of colors and symbols.  Always use the same way to mark your keywords. Make a simple chart of your colors and symbols and keep it in your Bible for reference.

Also mark your pronouns such as I, you, he, she, it, we, our and etc., and synonyms.  Synonyms are words that have the same meaning in the contest.  So look at 1 Peter 5:8.  The synonym for the devil is the word adversary.

Bible Study Blog-Make Your Visual Summary Charts

Bible Study Blog-Make Your Visual Summary Charts

In your Bible notebook, you will be making a Visual Summary Chart at the end of every book. You may arrange these pages anyway you wish but here's what to include:
Record the author of the book: as in Peter-The Author is Peter
If the author is not mentioned in the book, leave this blank
Record the date the book was written--you might have to do a little research to find the date
Record the key words-I will list the main keywords of the Bible in our next post

Copy the chapters themes that you listed at the beginning of each chapter--If there is more than  one theme in the chapter, list them both.
Look for and record segment divisions--A book can be divided several ways--dates, reigns of kings, topics, doctrines, major characters or events and more.
Record the purpose of the book--Find out the reason the author is writing this book--
Record the main theme of the book--put all these things together to discover the main theme of the book-Themes for each chapter, author's purpose for writing the book, content of the book chapter by chapter and segment by segment and ask yourself the question?  What one statement best descirbes the book as a whole.

Bible Study Blog-Note Expressions of Time

Bible Study Blog-Note Expressions of Time

Look for the Expressions of time-such as a certain time of the month, at the Feast of Booths-note these times by drawing a clock face in the margin.  Time can also be found by looking for the key words, until, then, when, and after.  Mark these words with your clock symbol to let you see the sequence of events, and give you a better understanding of the time-line.
Note terms of conclusion also--by the keywords wherefore, therefore, for this reason, and finally. Note these in the margin as conclusions.  Note 1 Peter 5:6
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:  Conclusion--God will exalt you in due time-if we what--HUMBLE OURSELVES.
