Bible Study-Mark Key Words and Phrases
A key word is one that is essential to the text. It might be a noun, a descriptive word, or an action that plays a part in conveying the authors' message. A key word is one that when it is removed, it leaves the passage devoid of meaning. Sometimes these key words are repeated many times in passage to get the point across. As you mark your key words, as the same questions we had in our last study--who, what, when, where and why. For example, if someone is suffering, ask who is suffering and what caused the suffering.
Key words can be marked in many ways__find the way you like the most_this will be your personal addition to your Bible Study. You can use symbols such as hearts, triangles, back signal or any that you like. I like the use of colors, and that is why I ask you to buy your colored pencils and pens. Colored pencils and multicolored ballpoint pens with fine tips work the best. You can use a colored combination, and this is the system I like. I love the distinctive marking system. With this system you will pick a color for a certain word or person--such as red for God and Jesus-I do a cross for Jesus in red and a cross for God in red with a circle at the head of the cross--this way, the minute I look at the passage, I know what God was saying or doing, and I know what Jesus was doing just by the red symbols. You can use a purple for love and ect.--but use your own system so you will know exactly where you are at when studying. BE CONSISTENT--don't change the colored markings or symbols. This Visual aid is going to be very important in your study. List you color codes and symbols in the back of your Bible for reference in case you forget- or put them on an index card and keep it in your Bible.
